🚀 Space war ready? Trump’s golden dome aims to blast missiles before they enter earth’s atmosphere

The United States, under President Donald Trump, has set out plans for a massive missile defence project called the “Golden Dome.” This ambitious system aims to protect the country from aerial threats such as hypersonic missiles, drones, and potentially even missiles launched from space.

Massive Defense Project Revealed

The details were revealed last week during a presentation to about 3,000 defense contractors in Huntsville, Alabama. The presentation, titled “Go Fast, Think Big!”, outlined how the Golden Dome will feature three layers of missile interceptors, advanced radar arrays, and high-powered lasers. It will also include space-based defenses designed to strike missiles while they are still outside Earth’s atmosphere.

One of the most ambitious features is the goal of shooting down missiles from space. While the US has previously built interceptors and re-entry vehicles, officials noted that no vehicle has ever been successfully developed that can survive the intense heat of re-entering the atmosphere while still tracking and hitting an enemy missile.

Funding, Locations, and Contractors

The Golden Dome comes with a huge price tag — $175 billion. So far, $25 billion has been approved by Congress through the president’s tax and spending bill passed in July. An additional $45.3 billion is included in Trump’s 2026 presidential budget request. However, even with this funding, there is still a large gap in the budget.

A US official stated that while there is already significant funding in place, there is still no confirmed estimate of the full cost. To help cover the shortfall, Trump suggested in May that Canada could contribute $61 billion towards the project.

A map shown during the presentation revealed a potential site for a new large-scale missile field in the US Midwest. This would be in addition to the two existing missile fields — one in southern California and another in Alaska.

Lockheed Martin, a major US defense contractor, is expected to play a leading role in the project. The company described the Golden Dome as a defense shield with “unmatched speed and accuracy” capable of neutralizing modern threats. Other companies believed to be competing for contracts include Palantir, defense manufacturer Anduril, and Elon Musk’s SpaceX. However, SpaceX was not mentioned in the official slides shown to contractors.

From Campaign Promise to Executive Order

The origins of the Golden Dome can be traced back to Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, where he repeatedly promised to build “a missile defense shield around our country.” During campaign speeches, Trump compared his vision to Israel’s Iron Dome — a defense system that detects incoming rockets, calculates their path, and intercepts them before they reach their target.

Israel’s Iron Dome was developed with over $1 billion in US funding and has been highly effective in intercepting short-range rockets. Trump’s Golden Dome, however, would be much larger in scale, aiming to defend against faster and more advanced threats, including hypersonic missiles and large drone swarms.

Just days after taking office on January 27, Trump signed an executive order to immediately begin construction of the system. This funding was approved alongside deep cuts to other federal programmes, including Medicaid, as part of his tax and spending bill.

Lockheed Martin praised Trump’s plan in March, stating that the Golden Dome would “secure America’s future.” The company claimed the system would use advanced radar, lasers, and interceptors to shield the country from attacks at unprecedented speed and accuracy.

The presentation in Huntsville emphasized that the Golden Dome will rely on multiple layers of defense — interceptors on the ground, advanced tracking systems in the air, and weapons in space. The aim is to create overlapping protection so that any incoming threat can be targeted at multiple stages of its journey.

While many technical and financial challenges remain, the Golden Dome proposal is one of the most ambitious military defense projects ever put forward in the United States. Its mix of ground-based, aerial, and space-based technology sets it apart from previous missile defense efforts and makes it a subject of intense interest in defense circles.
