Tech rivalry explodes into orbit: Altman raced Musk and Google for space dominance — but loses first battle

Sam Altman has always been known for his bold ideas and big ambitions. Over the years, he has transformed OpenAI from a basic AI research group into one of the most powerful technology companies in the world. With tools like ChatGPT, image generation models, and multiple advanced modes, Altman has become a major figure in the global tech race.

But recent reports suggest that Altman set his eyes even higher—quite literally—by trying to compete with Elon Musk’s SpaceX. According to sources, Altman reached out to a rising rocket company named Stoke Space in an attempt to form a partnership or even acquire it. The goal was reportedly to gain the capabilities needed to build space infrastructure similar to SpaceX.

However, things did not go as planned.

A Bold Move That Raised Eyebrows

A report published in the Washington Journal revealed that Sam Altman began discussions with Stoke Space sometime before the summer of 2025. These talks grew stronger during the summer and fall, showing how serious Altman was about diving into the space industry.

Stoke Space is known for developing reusable rockets designed to compete with companies like SpaceX. The company has been gaining attention for its fast progress and its mission to build low-cost launch vehicles.

Altman’s proposal reportedly included major equity investments—enough for OpenAI to possibly gain controlling ownership of Stoke Space. The discussions involved huge amounts of money, possibly billions of dollars, making it one of Altman’s most ambitious moves yet.

If the deal had gone through, OpenAI would have taken a major step into the aerospace sector, giving Altman the tools he needed to build space-based infrastructure.

But according to the latest reports, the talks have completely stopped. The deal is now “off the table”, and no active negotiations are happening between the two companies.

Why Altman Wanted A Rocket Company

To understand Altman’s interest in Stoke Space, we need to look at the growing competition between major tech companies in artificial intelligence and space technologies.

The rivalry between Sam Altman and Elon Musk is not new. Musk co-founded OpenAI but later left, and the two have often disagreed publicly about how AI should be developed. Both now operate competing AI models—OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Musk’s Grok—each claiming to be better than the other.

But this rivalry has expanded far beyond chatbots.

Google has also entered the race. The company is working on an ambitious project called Project Suncatcher, which involves placing data centers in space. This would allow Google to massively increase its computing power for training AI models like Gemini 3.

A space-based data center can get uninterrupted solar energy, stay cool naturally, and process huge amounts of data without the limitations faced on Earth.

This move by Google has put additional pressure on Altman, who is already trying to push OpenAI ahead of its competitors. If Google succeeds first, it could give them a major advantage in building more powerful AI systems.

This may explain why Altman urgently wanted a partnership with a rocket company capable of sending heavy equipment into space. By acquiring Stoke Space or partnering with it, he could create his own pathway to extraterrestrial data centers—similar to what Google is planning.

But without a space-launch partner, OpenAI is limited to operations on Earth, while Google and SpaceX continue to expand beyond it.

Talks Collapse And Raise New Questions

Even though the discussions between Altman and Stoke Space sounded promising at first, insiders say the deal faced several obstacles. One of the biggest challenges was the scale of investment needed. A move into the space industry requires massive funding, careful planning, and long-term commitment.

Another challenge was the possibility that Stoke Space might not want to hand over controlling ownership to a company primarily focused on software and artificial intelligence. Rocket companies usually rely on engineering leadership, not tech-industry control.

Whatever the reasons, the final outcome is clear:

The deal is officially not happening.

With the talks now shut down, OpenAI will have to continue its AI race without a direct way to send technology into space. Meanwhile, SpaceX remains far ahead in rocket launches, and Google is pushing forward with its space-data-center plans.

The situation has drawn attention worldwide because it shows just how competitive the AI and space industries have become. What started as a battle between AI models has now expanded into a fight for dominance in outer space.

Sam Altman may have big dreams, but for now, his attempt to challenge Elon Musk’s space empire has reportedly failed.

Still, the sudden end of these talks has left many people wondering what Altman will try next—and whether he will make another attempt to break into the space race in the future.
