🛰️ Musk Warns: “Cancel SpaceX Contracts and Astronauts Could Die in Orbit”

Dispute Over ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ Sparks Heated Exchange

A fresh war of words has erupted between US President Donald Trump and billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, the owner of Tesla and SpaceX. The controversy began when Trump posted a statement accusing Musk’s companies of benefiting from “big subsidies” and lucrative government contracts provided by the US government. Trump also claimed that these subsidies and contracts might be revoked, which could force Musk to shut down his businesses and “go back to South Africa.”

The reason behind this clash is the “Big Beautiful Bill” that Elon Musk has openly opposed. Musk said that this bill would increase America’s debt, lead to the loss of millions of jobs, and harm the country’s future. On the other hand, Trump argued that Musk was fully aware of the bill and supported it until he found out it would scale back the electric vehicle (EV) mandate, which required significant government funding.

Trump added, “If we stop giving subsidies to Elon Musk, Tesla will stop making electric cars, and rockets and satellites will no longer be launched by SpaceX. He will have to pack up and leave.” He also mentioned that Musk’s companies heavily rely on the support they receive from the government in the form of subsidies and contracts.

Trump further alleged that contracts awarded to Musk’s companies were not purely based on merit but influenced by political connections and government favoritism. In response, Musk argued that SpaceX and Tesla won every major contract through competitive bidding, and each contract was earned through innovation, efficiency, and cost-saving advantages.

The relationship between Musk and Trump has changed significantly. Once close allies, the two became distant after Musk resigned from the White House advisory council during Trump’s second term. Musk had previously donated heavily to Trump’s campaign and was known as one of his top supporters.

Musk Fires Back: “No Subsidies, Only Merit-Based Contracts”

In response, Elon Musk firmly rejected Trump’s claim that his companies survive only due to government subsidies. He emphasized that neither Tesla nor SpaceX relies on subsidies to stay operational. Instead, he pointed out that SpaceX earned its NASA contracts by offering better services at lower costs than competitors.

Musk issued a sharp warning, stating that if the government canceled SpaceX’s NASA contracts, astronauts could end up stranded in space. He explained that SpaceX is currently the only American company capable of reliably sending humans to space and bringing them back safely. “If you stop these contracts, you risk the lives of astronauts,” Musk said.

He further clarified that Tesla also operates in a highly competitive environment and has grown through innovation and hard work, not government handouts. “We didn’t get free money. We worked hard to deliver value,” Musk added.

This isn’t the first time Musk has had to defend his companies against such accusations. Over the years, questions have repeatedly been raised about Tesla and SpaceX benefiting from tax credits and government assistance.

Washington Post Reveals $38 Billion in Support to Musk’s Companies

According to an analysis published by The Washington Post, Musk and his companies have received over $38 billion in government support over the last 20 years. This includes a combination of contracts, loans, subsidies, and tax credits. In Indian currency, this is equal to approximately ₹3.2 lakh crore.

However, the nature of this support is important to understand. SpaceX’s deals with NASA are contract-based, meaning they were won after competitive bidding. These are not financial giveaways but payments for services such as launching satellites, resupplying the International Space Station, and even launching astronauts.

When it comes to Tesla, the company has received tax incentives for producing electric vehicles, a common benefit provided to all EV manufacturers to encourage green technology. Tesla has also repaid many of its earlier loans.

Supporters of Musk say that such assistance is common in the tech and aerospace industry and that Tesla and SpaceX have returned great value to taxpayers. Critics argue that the government has helped Musk more than others.

Still, Musk insists that every penny earned by his companies was through legal, open, and merit-based processes. “You can’t just take back contracts because you feel like it,” he said.

This dispute has now taken center stage in American political and business circles. As of now, neither side seems ready to back down. The argument has stirred questions about how much help private companies receive from the government and whether it’s fair to call that help a ‘subsidy’ or a ‘reward for good work’.
