FCC Grants Approval for AST SpaceMobile to Launch First Commercial Satellites

AST SpaceMobile, Inc. has achieved a historic milestone in the field of telecommunications by securing an initial license from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for space-based operations within the United States. This license is pivotal for AST SpaceMobile’s ambitious project to establish the world’s first space-based cellular broadband network that will be accessible directly by standard smartphones. The network is designed to serve both commercial and government sectors, marking a significant leap forward in global communication capabilities.

The FCC’s approval allows AST SpaceMobile to use several crucial frequency bands: V, S, and UHF. These frequencies are essential for the efficient operation of satellite communication systems. Specifically, they support a range of functions including gateway operations, which link the satellites to ground-based networks; feeder links, which transmit data to and from the satellites; and telemetry, tracking, and control operations that monitor and manage satellite performance. The initial license authorizes these activities for the company’s first five BlueBird satellites, which are fundamental to its space-based network infrastructure.

Closing the Digital Divide and Enhancing Connectivity

The grant from the FCC is a significant step towards addressing the digital divide in the United States. The digital divide is the disparity between those who have easy access to modern digital technology and those who do not. By permitting AST SpaceMobile to launch and operate its satellites, the FCC is making a major contribution towards reducing this gap. The company has also established agreements with over 45 mobile network operators globally, encompassing a total of more than 2.8 billion subscribers. This extensive network includes prominent telecom providers like Vodafone Group, AT&T, Verizon, and many others. These agreements are crucial for the widespread deployment and success of AST SpaceMobile’s space-based network, ensuring that its services can reach a vast number of users around the world.

The FCC’s initial license grant represents a monumental achievement for AST SpaceMobile.
