📡 Electronic Warfare Escalates: Poland Blames Russia for Dangerous GPS Jamming Near Border

Poland has raised a strong alarm about a troubling situation happening in the northern part of the country. Reports say that Global Positioning System (GPS) signals are being jammed – and Poland believes Russia is behind it.

Growing Interference in Poland’s Sky

These GPS signals are important because they help many devices, vehicles, and even airplanes know exactly where they are.

The problem isn’t small. In fact, drone operators in northern Poland have noticed that their drones lose control or fly in the wrong direction. That’s because the GPS signals they rely on are being blocked or interfered with. According to Polish officials, this is not just random. It’s part of a larger plan by Russia to create problems for Poland through cyber methods.

Poland believes this GPS jamming is one part of a much bigger effort to disturb peace and safety. The country says this is a form of hybrid war – where countries don’t use tanks or bombs, but use technology to cause confusion and harm. Hybrid war can involve things like cyberattacks, fake news, and electronic interference like this GPS jamming.

Officials in Poland have explained that the interference is not just annoying—it is dangerous. For example, when drones or planes can’t get clear GPS signals, they might go off-course. This creates a risk for both people and infrastructure. Poland has said that these actions are taken very seriously and that various defense and cyber units are constantly working to stop or respond to these attacks.

Signs of a Wider Regional Problem

This GPS jamming issue is not only affecting Poland. Other countries in the region are also facing the same problem. Lithuania, which borders Poland, has also reported hundreds of GPS interference cases. In just one month—March of this year—over 300 incidents were reported by Lithuania’s air navigation authority. These incidents mostly happened near the borders with Russia and Belarus.

In one serious case, a passenger plane was supposed to land in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. But because of GPS interference, it had to be diverted to Warsaw, Poland. That shows how dangerous and disruptive these attacks can be, especially for air travel.

Estonia and Finland, which are also in the northern part of Europe, have faced similar problems. Last year, they also blamed Russia for jamming GPS signals in their airspace. Although Russia has officially denied doing this, the number of incidents keeps rising. Many countries believe that these acts are part of a pattern meant to disturb safety and cause confusion without using direct military force.

GPS jamming has also been seen many times during the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. There, it’s used as a weapon to make it hard for enemy forces to navigate and operate their equipment. Now, this same method appears to be spreading across borders, affecting nearby countries like Poland and others in the Baltic and Nordic regions.

What Is GPS Jamming and Why Is It Dangerous?

GPS stands for Global Positioning System. It uses satellites in the sky to send signals to devices on Earth. These signals help those devices figure out their exact location and time. This system is used in phones, cars, planes, drones, and even by emergency and military teams.

But GPS jamming happens when someone uses a device that sends out strong signals on the same frequency as the GPS satellites. These strong signals cover up or block the weaker satellite signals. As a result, devices can no longer read their position correctly. It’s like shouting loudly in a room so that nobody can hear the soft speaker. That’s how jamming works.

When jamming happens, a phone might show the wrong location. A drone might lose its way and fly into a dangerous area. An airplane might struggle to follow its flight path. For people, it can be frustrating. But for services like hospitals, police, rescue teams, and the military, it can be very risky.

This is why countries take GPS jamming very seriously. It’s not just about technology—it’s about safety. If the GPS stops working in certain areas, it could lead to accidents, delays, or serious harm.

Right now, Poland is urging other European countries to be aware of these threats. Authorities in Poland are working hard to track the GPS jamming and to protect the systems that rely on it. Special government units are on alert around the clock to watch for new disruptions.

While it’s still unclear how long this GPS interference will continue, one thing is certain: electronic attacks like these are becoming more common and more advanced. And countries across the region are taking notice.
