Pixxel Space’s Astonishing Plans: Mapping the Moon and Asteroids for Future Space Settlements

Bengaluru-based startup Pixxel Space is on the brink of revolutionizing space exploration with its cutting-edge constellation of Earth observation satellites. While initially focused on terrestrial applications, the company harbors ambitious plans to extend its reach beyond Earth, aiming to map the Moon and asteroids, and to search for materials crucial for building settlements in outer space.

In a comprehensive discussion with PTI editors at the agency’s headquarters, Pixxel Space co-founder and CEO Awais Ahmed outlined the startup’s long-term vision. These plans include exploring asteroids to identify building materials and potential fuel sources that could be critical for future space habitats. Ahmed emphasized the transformative potential of their hyper-spectral technology, which could be a game-changer in the quest to unlock space resources.

“Hyper-spectral Earth-gazing cameras are being built. It is possible to turn the same cameras around to face other things in space. These spacecraft could be used to map the solar system and visit the Moon, Mars, or the asteroid belt,” Ahmed explained.

Hyper-Spectral Technology: A Game-Changer for Space Exploration

The hyper-spectral cameras developed by Pixxel Space are designed to capture a wide range of wavelengths beyond what the human eye can see. With the use of this technology, the surface of the Earth may be thoroughly analyzed, yielding vital information for agriculture, urban planning, and environmental monitoring. However, the real innovation lies in the ability to adapt these cameras for space exploration. By turning these cameras outward, Pixxel Space aims to gather comprehensive data about the composition and resources of celestial bodies, paving the way for future space missions.

Ahmed elaborated on the potential of placing satellites in cis-lunar orbits—positions between the Earth and the Moon. These orbits would enable more detailed exploration of the Moon, providing critical insights into its surface, geological activity, and potential resources. The ability to map the Moon with high precision could lead to the discovery of materials necessary for building lunar habitats and sustaining human presence.

Mining the Asteroid Belt: A New Frontier

The asteroid belt, located between Mars and Jupiter, represents a new frontier in space exploration. This region is filled with rocky bodies that vary in size and composition. Some of these asteroids contain ice, which can be split into hydrogen and oxygen to create fuel or stored as water. This resource could be crucial for sustaining long-term space missions and settlements, reducing the need to transport vast quantities of materials from Earth.

“We can traverse the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter to identify which asteroids have valuable resources that could be used in space exploration, and which are just lovely and worthless” Ahmed said. This targeted approach to asteroid mining could significantly enhance the efficiency of space missions, providing essential resources for constructing space infrastructure.

Aligning with Space Giants

Pixxel Space’s vision aligns with the broader goals of space industry giants like SpaceX and Blue Origin. While Elon Musk’s SpaceX focuses on creating transportation infrastructure for space travel, and Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin aims to develop space habitats, Pixxel Space intends to supply the necessary materials to make these visions a reality.

Ahmed likened the space revolution to the building of railroads in the 19th century, with SpaceX and Blue Origin laying the tracks and Pixxel Space providing the materials for the journey. “The materials that are needed to kind of make it all happen are things we want to supply.” he stated. This collaborative approach underscores the interconnected nature of the modern space industry, where innovation in one area can drive progress in another.

Upcoming Satellite Launches by Pixxel Space

Pixxel Space plans to launch six hyper-spectral satellites later this year as part of its constellation aimed at mapping the Earth in greater detail. This constellation will provide high-resolution images that can be used for various applications, including environmental monitoring, agriculture, and urban planning. The ability to capture detailed data from space will enhance our understanding of the planet and aid in addressing critical challenges such as climate change and resource management.

Next year, the startup plans to launch an additional 18 satellites, completing its constellation in low Earth orbit. This network of satellites will enhance the company’s ability to capture detailed data and provide valuable insights for both Earth-based and space-focused projects. The expanded constellation will enable continuous monitoring of the Earth’s surface, providing real-time data for a wide range of applications.
